The Jeep Wagoneer S is making history as the first all-electric vehicle made in North America, specifically for the North American market.

Rumors are the all-electric Recon and next-generation Cherokee will roll off the production line with the Wagoneer S.

The Wagoneer S will have dual motors, all-wheel drive, 600 hp, 448 kW battery pack, and is rumored to have a 400-mile range.

EV Tires 7,000 miles?

Thanks to Steve Howard, a long-time supporter of the show for sending in this news item.  If you have news you want to share with us, just go to jeeptalkshow.com/contact to find out how to connect with us.

A recent owner of a renewed Mercedes EQS 450+ was surprised to find that after 5,000 miles of driving it was time to replace the tires.

It seems 7,000 miles per set of tires on an EV is considered normal wear.  Not off-road tires but still quite expensive!  $1,400 to $1,500 for a set!

Tire mileage can vary widely of course, but he said he frequently changes EV tires at just 8,000 to 10,000 miles.

I thought it was people using that instant torque or just poor judgment in accelerating, and that may be a part of it, but even when babied, tires wear out much faster than the ICE vehicles.  One reason is weight.  Battery packs aren’t lights.

The claims of less maintenance for EVs may be true, but it doesn’t apply to the tires.

How often do you rotate tires if you’re only getting 10k, every other Wednesday?

Jeep Talk Show Gladiator Update

It’s fun and interesting owning a Jeep.  Certainly working on your Jeep isn’t required.  You can always take it to a shop, or the dealer, to have problems resolved or modifications made but I’ve never been one of those people to have enough money to buy the mods and then have someone else install it.

Sure tires mounted and balanced.  Ring and pinions installed.  Mods that require welding, selectable locker install, but everything else is me.

Something that anyone that is going to need to make modifications, or part replacement for repair is tools.  I’ve known about air tools for a long time.  My Dad worked at Dresser for many years as a machinist.  Making parts for air tools.

I’ve used a ½ impact and ⅜ air socket for years.  The smallest Huskey air compressor and 30-foot air hose have been working fine, but now I have a new-fangled Dewalt ½” impact.  Why will the craftsman ½” impact stop working?

The Dewalt was $250, but the air power impacts were maybe that much and the Husky air compressor was $99 (20 years ago).

Before you get caught up on the TOOLS you must consider how often you will use them.  You can still do a lot, for cheaper, using air tools, or just a socket wrench and a set of sockets.
